Composite materials are an essential component of modern life and modern industry. Made up through the combination of various materials such as plastics and resins, and other reinforcing fibres such as glass, carbon or other natural fibres, they are a key technology for transporting water, food and people, the production of renewable energy and for connecting people via the phone or the internet.
Composites are ideal for reducing the weight of cars, aircraft, trains and boats, as well as increasing strength and durability. Unlike metals, composites don’t rust and are therefore the ideal material for developing and diversifying South Africa’s Economy, and its Oceans Economy drive through the production of boats, oil & gas installations, wind turbines, deep sea mining equipment, maritime patrol aircraft, aquaculture cages, waterfronts and harbours. Additionally, composite materials can be used in the development of vehicles, trains, and the aerospace sector.
South Africa’s Department of Trade and Industry is supporting the Mandela Bay Composites Cluster to develop skills and technologies to grow the composites sector and make South Africa a more globally competitive country. The main applications that South Africa is engaged in include:
- Renewable Energy (wind turbine blades)
- Automotive components
- Rail components (interior parts)
- Infrastructure including Bulk water (water pipes), road signs, manhole covers, etc
- Reinforced Pellets (Long Fibre Thermoplastics)
- Aerospace (interior and exterior parts).
The Mandela Bay Composites Cluster and eNtsa, an engagement institute within Nelson Mandela University, have signed a co-operation agreement which is set to boost the development and use of composites in South Africa. The two entities will work together to unlock value for local manufacturers by optimising access to the Composites Innovation Centre (CIC), housed on the Nelson Mandela University campus. The First African Advanced Manufacturing and Composites Show will be held between 7-9 November 2018 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth.
South Africa has an historic opportunity to accelerate growth and development in the African continent by tapping into the potential that new technologies hold. South Africa is new in composite manufacturing while Italy is one of the leaders in this sector, providing additional opportunities for co-operation between South African and Italian companies.
Discussions between key stakeholders during the conference will provide the way forward.
After the presentations, Mr. Andy Radford of the Mandela Bay Cluster will be available for Business-to-Business meetings via video conference (upon prior request not later than 18 June 2018).
